What lawn ornament could possibly be more “Jersey Shore” than a lifeguard stand? Your own personal perch to keep watch over the pool, barbecue or that second-floor deck could be had for an affordable price, courtesy of the Borough of Lavallette.

Officials at this week’s borough council meeting said the town has decided to place some of its retired lifeguard stands up for sale on the website GovDeals. The website specializes in selling surplus property from local and state governments, and usually features mundane items such as outdated computers and police radios, office furniture or aging construction equipment. But every once in a while, there’s a local gem.

Lavallette has four retired lifeguard stands up for sale, with bids on the eBay-style website ranging from $50 to $110. The auctions on the stands ends Friday at 12 noon.

The lifeguard stands are retired from service because they’ve experienced some wear and tear, fading paint, and perhaps a couple of loose nails – which the borough acknowledges in its product description – but for a handy Shore resident, they could represent an easy do-it-yourself restoration project that would certainly be a conversation starter at backyard gatherings.

“The stand spent many summer seasons on the beaches of Lavallette,” the listing states, adding that they “could have been at any one of the streets.”

The items are only available for sale through the website to comply with New Jersey bidding laws for surplus items, but plenty of photos accompany the listing and bidders can arrange an in-person inspection.
