Anti-Erosion Work Completed Near Seaside Park Pier, Kayak Launch

A relatively small, but long-awaited project to shore up a portion of the bayfront in Seaside Park has been completed.

In the spring, the borough council awarded a contract for the repair of significant erosion just south of the 14th Avenue pier along Barnegat Bay, with the hope of not only saving trees that were threatened with falling into the water, but building a breakwater system to prevent the problem from recurring. The work has now been completed, with the swath of land bulked up with rip-rap and stability caging.

Gabion baskets, filled with rock and outfitted with with locks, now extend 2-feet into the bay and were designed to be “built up almost like a pyramid where they’re stacked,” said Councilman William Kraft. The Gabion breakwater then goes back landward to displace the wave action.

The council prioritized saving a number of large trees that were located next to the eroded area – a goal which was reached, with the large trees remaining in place.

Borough Administrator Karen Kroon said the materials for the project cost $27,500. That figure includes the cost of the Gabion baskets, fill, stainless steel material and the stone filler. Borough workers prepared the site and removed the construction debris.
