The Toms River Township council has been asked to endorse a plan presented by the state Department of Transportation to add new signage and flashing beacons to two intersections with pedestrian crosswalks in the barrier island portion of town.
The council, at its meeting last week, tabled its approval due to an ongoing political dispute, however it is expected that the state will continue to move to install Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons at the intersections of Route 35 South and Second Avenue and Route 35 South and Harbor Drive. The Second Avenue intersection is located within Ortley Beach while the Harbor Drive intersection is located in the Ocean Beach section, several blocks south of the landmark Ocean Beach Marina. The measure to authorize the beacons was among a lengthy number of items removed from the agenda, with the council president stating he and his colleagues had not had enough time to review items.
Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons, known by its acronym “RRFBs,” accompany existing crosswalks. They include rectangular- shaped yellow indications, each with an LED array-based light source. RRFBs flash with an alternating high frequency when activated to alert drivers to the fact that a pedestrian is crossing the roadway. In the case of the Toms River beacons, the lights would be activated by pedestrians pressing a button.
