A 32-year-old Toms River police officer has pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, criminal mischief and simple assault in connection with an incident that made national headlines in April.
Rebecca Sayegh, 32, of Toms River, pled guilty Monday in the courtroom of Superior Court Judge Guy P. Ryan. When she is sentenced in January, prosecutors will seek a term of 180 days in the Ocean County Jail as a condition of probation, no contact with the victims in the case, and restitution. Additionally, Sayegh was required to forfeit her position as a Toms River Township police officer effective immediately, and has forfeited all future public employment in the state of New Jersey.
According to a statement from prosecutors, the incident leading to Sayegh’s initial arrest took place April 25, 2025 at about 11:20 p.m., when Berkeley Township officers were called to a residence on Evernhan Avenue for a report of a domestic disturbance. Responding Officers discovered Sayegh – who was off-duty – had smashed the front glass door and entered the residence. It was determined that Sayegh also damaged the hood of a vehicle belonging to one of the victims which was parked in the driveway. She was located at the scene and was taken into custody after having “resisted efforts to peacefully place her under arrest,” the statement said.
Sayegh was released from the Ocean County Jail in accordance with New Jersey bail reform law, and returned to court Monday. The case went viral after details of the incident began to spread across the internet, alongside glamorous photos of the officer.
