Two businesses in Brick’s Top Tomato Square shopping center – Smarty Pants Day Care and Party Fair – were closed Wednesday due to severe water damage caused by a roof leak, officials said.
Brick police officers as well as firefighters from the Breton Woods and Pioneer Hose fire companies went to the shopping plaza at 8:45 a.m., Capt. Ron Dougard said, investigating a “hazardous condition.” When they arrived, they found the water leak, which reached some of the electrical fixtures in the ceiling and damaged several ceiling tiles.
As a result, the day care center and party store were ordered closed by the township’s Building Department and Bureau of Fire Prevention, Dougard said.

“All 50 children in the day care were evacuated safely without incident,” said Dougard.
The businesses will remain closed until an electrician can determine the severity of the damage to the electrical fixtures, the roof is repaired and the buildings are deemed safe, Dougard said.
