NWS: ‘High’ Rip Current Danger Will Last Through Saturday

A high probability of dangerous rip currents that have kept swimmers out of the water at some local beaches over the past several days will continue into the holiday weekend, the National Weather Service said.

In its surf zone forecast for Ocean County released early Friday morning, the risk will remain “high” both Friday and Saturday. The NWS issues surf zone forecasts for two-day periods. A “high” rip current designation means “life-threatening rip currents are likely in the surf zone,” the NWS said.

According to the forecast, Friday’s surf height will be 3-5 feet, with a water temperature in the upper 60s. Winds will be from the northeast at about 15 m.p.h. High tide will occur at 8:56 a.m. and 9:16 p.m.

On Saturday, the surf height is likewise expected to be 3-5 feet with similar water temperatures and northwest winds around 5 m.p.h., becoming south in the afternoon. High tide will occur at 9:46 a.m. and 10:07 p.m.
