Lavallette Sets Boardwalk Bike Hours for 2025, Adds Cops and Parking

With temperatures having approached that all-too-comfortable 80 degree mark this week, summer is quite literally “in the air.” In Lavallette, borough council members this week were setting the table for the season ahead, clarifying policies and announcing what’s new for the upcoming season.

Bikes on the Boards

The hours during which bicycles are allowed to be ridden on the boardwalk have changed over the years, though it appears the borough has found a sweet spot over the last couple of seasons. This week, the council voted to continue the hours that were put in place last year (and the year before) following requests from residents.

Bicycles can operate on the boardwalk during the official “bathing season,” from June 14 through Labor Day, from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m., then 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day. Bicycles are prohibited at all other times until the end of the season.

Safe Summer Ahead

The council this week also approved seven new candidates to attend the Ocean County Police Academy for training to become Class I special officers. Class I officers are unarmed, work part-time or seasonally, and carry out simple law enforcement tasks such as directing traffic, keeping basic order and issuing summonses for minor violations. The seven prospective officers will begin training May 19.

Responding to a question from a resident, Mayor Walter LaCicero said the officers would help enforce crosswalk regulations, since it has been an area of public concern. The same resident asked if speed detection monitors could be added to Bay Boulevard, however – perhaps ironically – one of the borough’s speed monitoring signs was hit by a vehicle and is still in the process of being replaced.

Finally, borough officials are tackling parking where they are able to do so. Nine additional parking spaces in the bayside district this season. Councilman Robert Lamb said nine new spaces are being created and marked north of the pickleball courts.
