Island Residents Urged to Conserve Energy 3-7 p.m.; Extreme Heat Warning Issued

Seaside Heights officials have released an announcement urging residents to try their best to conserve energy during a four-hour peak period Monday.

“Today’s forecast high temperatures means today is a peak energy demand day,” the announcement said.

Seaside Heights is one of a handful of municipalities in New Jersey that owns its own electrical utility, meaning local usage affects the overall costs of running the plant. Residents are being asked to curtail electric consumption 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., as officials expect the power grid to experience high energy demand.

This will likely also be the case on June 24 and June 25 (Tuesday and Wednesday), the borough said. Likewise, Lavallette operates a municipal electricity utility, with officials there also recommending conservation.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the region, forecasting “dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 degrees expected.” The warning will remain in effect until Wednesday at 8 p.m., according to the NWS office in Mount Holly.

“The hottest temperatures and heat indices will occur Monday and Tuesday,” the warning statement said. “Low temperatures near 75 to 80 degrees and high humidity will not offer much relief from the heat at night.”

Specifically, residents are asked to:

• Turn off any unnecessary lights and electronics. Unplug any charging units.
• Postpone use of major appliances such as your electric clothes dryer or dishwasher unit until after 7pm.
• Turn your electric hot water heater to vacation setting.
• Reduce use of your air conditioning; temporarily raise the temperature to 77 degrees.
