Seaside Heights Details New Pickleball, Basketball Court Facility

Seaside Heights is soliciting bids for its long-awaited project to rejuvenate the borough’s basketball courts and add the always-in-demand pickleball courts alongside the facility. A bid announcement issued Monday provides some new details on what the future recreation facility will look like after it is completed next to the Hugh J. Boyd Elementary School on Bay Boulevard.

The lot on which the  new facility is planned has historically been home to just basketball courts, and while demand for pickleball has skyrocketed, the borough has decided to leave basketball courts in place after briefly considering eliminating them.

The design plans envision four purpose-built pickleball courts – not converted tennis courts – and one basketball court within the space. Some of the funding for the effort will come via a $68,000 grant that the borough received last year. The borough sought $147,000 for the project, but the grant funding will defray much of the cost. Students from the school would presumably still be able to access the area during recess and other time periods, assuming the courts were not reserved.

The plans announced Monday call for the removal of four existing basketball hoops and their concrete footings, followed by the installation of two new gooseneck-style basketball hoops and four pickleball nets with posts. The project design also calls for milling of the site, a 3-inch overlay, painting, and striping of the 1,900 square yard court surface.

The entire court surface will be painted and striped for one full basketball court and four pickleball courts. The borough is also seeking supplemental bids to include the following work the removal and replacement of 525 linear feet of 6-foot-tall chain link fence, plus the installation of two new fence gates.

Proposals from prospective bidders will be opened July 15, 2025 and, assuming there is a qualified bid within the borough’s budget, an award will likely take place at the next council meeting. Once a contract is awarded and a start-date is agreed-upon, the contractor will be required to complete the work in 45 days.
