Project to Add New Breakwater to Seaside Park Marina Getting Underway

Work was beginning this week to construct a new breakwater in Barnegat Bay in order to protect the Seaside Park municipal marina, officials said.

Repairs began Monday ahead of the whole of the project which will replace half of the dog-leg shaped bulkhead structure that juts out into the bay west of the J Street Marina.

The borough in June awarded an $84,388 contract to R. Kremer and Son Marine, of Brick, to perform the project at the marina that was designed by the borough’s engineering firm, CME Associates. The project will consist of the demolition of portions of the existing breakwater, construction of new sections of breakwater, bulkhead repairs and other incidental work at the marina.

“The work at the north breakwater, coming from seaward, is going to commence [this] week,” said Councilman William Kraft. “It won’t interfere with any marina activities inside. The work will be performed outside, on the bayside, of the marina.”

The breakwater at the marina is made up of two bulkhead structures that wrap around the cove near its entrance, with one extending from the slip closest to the bay at the parking area between J Street and I Street, and the second extending from the innermost portion of the peninsula at K Court, north of the marina itself. The bulkheading serves to attenuate wave action from the bay, protecting the marina – and the boats inside it – from damage and controlling shoreline erosion.

A 35-foot section of the north breakwater was found to be in disrepair, Kraft said, with engineers ultimately determining the structure required replacement rather than continuing regular maintenance work.
