Police: No Injuries, Damage Limited in Collapse at Lavallette Sunoco Station

Photographs and videos of a canopy collapse at Kelly’s Sea-Bay Sunoco in Lavallette began circulating Friday evening, the result of a wild wind storm that swept through the region for several hours.

Police Chief Christian LaCicero confirmed to Shorebeat that there were no injuries in the collapse, and building inspectors were on the way to confirm the level of damage the beloved local filling station and mechanic’s shop received.

“The canopy over the gas pumps got blown over in the wind, but it doesn’t seem there was any damage to the pumps themselves or the mechanic’s shop,” he said. “It looks pretty bad in the photos, but it seems like the canopy just tipped over and the pumps look okay.”

The collapse occurred at about 5:45 p.m., the chief said. A high wind warning that had been in effect for much of the day was set to end at 10 p.m. Friday night. Winds were forecast to normalize by Saturday morning.
