Chandler Field ‘Inclusive’ Playground in Lavallette Expected to Be Built for Summer

Lavallette’s long-awaited “inclusive” playground is one step closer to coming to fruition after additional funding was approved this week for the project, most of which is being funded through state grants.

The playground, which will be constructed at Chandler Field, is the result of the borough being awarded funding through Jake’s Law, intended to bolster efforts to construct playgrounds that are attractive for typical children and disabled children at the same time. Last summer, Lavallette was awarded $489,000 the construct the playground, with a local contribution of $163,000 that will come in the form of a 20 year loan at zero interest. The borough council on Monday night approved the bonding of $154,850, representing the bulk of the borough’s share.

“As soon as the funding comes in, we will order the rubberized flooring and the equipment,” said Councilwoman Joanne Filippone.

In addition to the new playground equipment, the “Jake’s Law” playground – which will replace the current playground at the field – will include quiet play areas, shaded sections, safe surfacing, and new fencing. The state dollars for the project are expected to be transferred by the end of April, at which point bids will be sought for construction and the rubberized surfacing.

“It’s a slow process because it’s government money, but we’re moving along,” said Filippone. “We anticipate it will be open for the summer – at least we think. We approved the plans and colors for the equipment, so once the funding arrives it will go out to bid.”

The borough’s Public Works department will demolish and cart away the old playground equipment to make room for the new features. The design and color scheme of the playground was selected in January by the council, with a contract awarded to Ben Shaffer Recreation for the purchase of the equipment itself at a cost of $381,667. The council decided to purchase the equipment first due to expected cost increases.
