A Brick Township man was lodged in the Ocean County Jail on Sunday after allegedly leaving the scene of a late-night accident with a 15-year-old bicyclist on Midstreams Road.

According to a statement issued by prosecutors, William Donohoe, 43, of Brick Township, was involved in the hit-and-run accident that occurred at about 10:55 p.m. Saturday night between his vehicle and the teen, who was riding an e-Bike. The crash happened at the intersection of Midstreams Road and Midstreams Place.

An investigation by Brick police and the county prosecutor’s office revealed that a Nissan Rogue was traveling northbound on Midstreams Place, when it made a left-hand turn onto Midstreams Road and struck the electric bicycle being operated by a 15-year-old male. The Nissan failed to stop and continued traveling westbound on Midstreams Road, the statement said. As a result of the crash, the victim was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he remains hospitalized in stable condition.

According to the statement, as responding officers were rendering aid to the victim, they observed Donohoe walking towards the crash site from a “significant distance away.” Continuing investigation revealed that Donohoe was the individual operating the Nissan that struck the electric bicycle and left the scene, the statement said.

Officers “observed that Donohoe appeared to be intoxicated,” the statement said, and based upon those observations, attempted to administer field sobriety tests. Donohoe was “unable to successfully perform the FSTs,” though the statement did not detail why. Donohoe was charged with driving under the influence and placed under arrest. He was then transported to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick Township, where a draw of his blood was obtained pursuant to court-authorized warrant. The results of the blood draw remain pending.

Donohoe was subsequently transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he is presently lodged pending a detention hearing. He has been formally charged with assault by auto and knowingly leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury.
