Brick’s Civic Plaza Getting New Tenants

A township-owned strip mall off Chambers Bridge Road will have two new tenants soon.

Civic Plaza, at 270 Chambers Bridge Road, is now owned by the township free and clear, said Mayor John Ducey. Any revenue generated by the property will now go directly into township coffers, he said.

Brick Fitness for Women will lease space at the complex for 10 weeks in order to hold classes there, Ducey said. The health club will pay a flat fee of $1,500 to hold five, one hour-long courses there for the 10 weeks.

A longer term lease, however, has been signed by the Brick Community Children’s Theater. The theater group will pay annual rent of $19,500 for a 1,500 square foot portion of the building. The two year lease will begin Oct. 1.

The Civic Plaza property has been the subject of a debate over the past several years over whether it should be sold or leased out to generate revenue. In 2012, the township was keen on selling the property, but talks with a prospective buyer fell through. Previous estimates by the township have predicted up to $400,000 in annual income from leasing out the property, however tenants have been slow to materialize, and last year, the township did not get any takers when it went to bid seeking the services of a real estate broker.
