Brick’s Volunteer Firefighters, EMTs and Their Families Will Qualify for Tuition Credit

The Brick Township council has adopted a measure that will allow for the township’s volunteer firefighters and EMTs, as well as their spouses and children, to qualify for tuition credits at a number of institutions.

The resolution, passed unanimously by the council last week, takes advantage of a 1998 state law that provides for $600 per year in tuition credit at county colleges and county technical schools. The law authorizes as much as $2,400 in credit over a four-year period. The credit does not involve money changing hands – the township is not paying the tuition. Those who qualify simply have the fees deducted from their tuition bills.

“The intent and purpose of the program is to recognize the service that’s performed by our volunteer personnel as a valuable asset in our community,” said Mayor John Ducey. “We wanted to give something back.”

The program is open to volunteers who commit for at least four years and have been in good standing over the past 12 months.
