Brick Looks to Expand Walking Routes to Schools

Brick has filed an application with state officials to obtain another round of funding under the Safe Routes to School program.

Previous funding from the program has been used to build sidewalks and upgrade crosswalks in various portions of the township. The latest round, Councilwoman Lisa Crate said, will focus on the areas around Midstreams and Lanes Mill elementary schools.

The funding, if approved, would allow the township to “fill in areas where sidewalks do not currently exist,” Crate said, as well as develop a study that would tally just how many students walk to school on a daily basis and which routes they take.

The township has been working to install sidewalks along the Lanes Mill Road corridor for years. Sidewalks are currently installed near the three schools along the road (Lanes Mill Elementary, Herbertsville Elementary and Brick Memorial High School) but sometimes abruptly end – for example, at Dunbeck Road just north of Lanes Mill Elementary.

The grant funding must be used toward sidewalks near elementary or middle schools.

“As the mother of children who walk to school, I am excited about this and I look forward to having it,” said Crate.
