Brick Prepares for Hermine: Sand Bags Available, Rescue Equipment Moved to Barrier Island

Brick officials spent the day Friday preparing for the effects of Tropical Storm Hermine, which could regenerate into a hurricane off the New Jersey coast this weekend.

Mayor John Ducey said emergency equipment had already been mobilized in the township’s barrier island portion in case rescues are necessary. Bulldozers have been stationed at beaches in case emergency berms need to be constructed during the storm. Fortunately, the sea wall will provide a first line of protection.

“More than likely, by the time Tuesday rolls around, the water will be lapping up against it,” Ducey said.

Township Business Administrator Joanne Bergin said sandbags were available at the township public works yard on Ridge Road.

“We had a storm prep meeting [Friday] morning to be sure we are mobilized and prepared and will regroup again [Saturday] to track how the weather system is moving,” said Bergin.

The township is advising residents in low-lying areas to move their vehicles to higher ground, Bergin said.
