Trucks Parked at Old Foodtown Site Part of Barter Deal With Township

Ever notice those trucks parked in at the site of the former Foodtown supermarket on Route 70?

They are allowed to be there, township officials say, and residents are receiving a benefit from their presence.

“We have a mutual agreement with them,” said Mayor John Ducey, explaining that the trucks are from a tree cutting and removal service, and are being allowed to use the parking lot in exchange for trimming and removing some trees for the township. “They’re getting the parking spots and we’re getting some trees taken down.”

In response to a question from a resident at a recent meeting of the township council, Township Administrator Joanne Bergin said no formal study was conducted to calculate the value of the parking spaces versus the tree-cutting services, but so far the deal has been beneficial, especially since the lot continues to sit empty while its former redeveloper is suing the township.

“We supervise the work and we’re happy with the agreement,” said Bergin.
