Brick to Receive $1M in State Funds Toward Two Park Renovations

Brick will use $1 million in state Green Acres funding to help carry out plans to rebuild two township parks.

A $1.2 million contract for the work at one of the parks, Hank Waltonowski Park (also known as Birchwood Park), already has been awarded, while the new development learned this week is that Bayside Park will be rebuilt this year.

The park, across from Brick Beach III on the bayfront, was devastated in Superstorm Sandy and – except for some emergency bulkhead and planking work – has never recovered. It remains popular, however, for crabbing, fishing and for those seeking a sunset photo.

Hank Waltonowski Park’s improvements include the construction of two playgrounds – one for children ages 2-5 and one for children ages 6-12 – plus safety surfacing in play areas, a basketball and volleyball court, a gazebo, and lighting and security cameras.

Detailed plans for the Bayside Park’s renovation have yet to be released and the township has not yet sought bids for the work to be completed.

In addition to the state funding, Brick has planned for the improvements in its annual capital budget.
