Weekend-Long Civil War Encampment Will Return to Brick

In what has become a long-standing tradition in Brick Township, the Historical Society will play host to a Civil War encampment during the “dog days” of summer this year.

The 61st N.Y. Volunteer Regiment will spend the weekend camping out, marching, firing guns from the period and demonstrating what it was like during an encampment. The public is invited to share stories with the soldiers. Encampments differ from “re-enactments” in that they display how day-to-day life was for soldiers between battles.

Encampments were temporary settlements that were set up by soldiers on both side of the war, providing both a place to sleep and a rudimentary forward operating base where they could train, repair equipment, develop strategies and socialize.

The Brick encampment will be held Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Aug 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Havens Homestead Museum property, located at  521 Herbertsville Road. Admission is fee, and the encampment is held rain or shine. The Historical Society will have hamburgers, franks and soft drinks for sale, plus a large homemade bake sale. The museum will be open for tours and the Lizzie Herbert Gift Shop will have specials.
