A member of the state General Assembly from Monmouth County has been named Brick Township’s new public defender. The previous position was held by Matthew Sage, who was appointed as a Superior Court judge in June and current sits in the Family Division in Toms River.
Luanne Peterpaul, a Democrat who represents the 11th legislative district in central Monmouth County, was unanimously appointed to the position by the township council Tuesday night. Peterpaul operates a law office in Asbury Park. Prior to her legislative stint, she served as a board chair of Garden State Equality where she was best known for her advocacy in legalizing gay marriage in New Jersey. She also authored the state’s anti-bullying law, which was signed by former Gov. Chris Christie in 2012. Professionally, she worked as an assistant prosecutor in Essex County and as a municipal court judge in Long Branch before her election to the legislature in 2023.
Peterpaul will be paid $500 per court session, with a total annual appropriation that cannot exceed $82,000.
