‘Pick Up Brick’ Event Seeking Volunteers to Clean Breton Woods Preserve

The township’s “Pick Up Brick” series of environmental cleanup events will continue this weekend at the Breton Woods tract, a property that was saved from major residential development through a preservation effort by the township and Ocean County.

The wooded property, located off Laurel Avenue and Drum Point Road, was previously owned by Visitation Roman Catholic Church, but was due to be sold to a national home-builder that planned 59 single-family residences on the site. The township and county ultimately partnered to purchase the site from the church, with the deal closing in 2023. Brick also received funds from the state’s Green Acres program toward the $8.55 million purchase. Since then, it has been open to the public as preserved land.

This Saturday, residents are invited to the Pick Up Brick event to work together to clean Breton Woods from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. The community cleanup effort “is an opportunity for residents to come together and make a positive impact on one of Brick’s natural spaces,” an announcement said. All necessary supplies will be provided and volunteers of all ages are encouraged to participate.
