The township council on Tuesday night introduced an ordinance endorsing the reduction of the speed limit on West Princeton Avenue following a study conducted by the Ocean County Engineering Department.
West Princeton Avenue is located – as the name implies – to the west of its more heavily-traveled neighboring road of a similar name. It runs in an east-west direction from Route 88 to Olden Street through a residential neighborhood on the west side of Route 70. The road is under county jurisdiction and currently has a speed limit of 35 m.p.h. The ordinance, which is requested by the county before the speed limit is formally changed, endorses a reduction to 30 m.p.h.
The county conducted two traffic studies in September on different portions of the roadway to determine if a change to the speed limit was appropriate, said Councilman Derrick Ambrosino. The study and analysis utilized the “85th percentile rule” to determine the actual speed of traffic compared with the speed limit, as well as the number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit using Federal Highway Administration speed safety methodology. The data showed the appropriate speed limit for the road was technically 31 m.p.h., making a reduction to 30 m.p.h. appropriate over leaving it at 35 m.p.h.

“The township’s Public Safety Committee agreed to lowering the speed limit in this neighborhood,” he said.
The ordinance is subject to a public hearing and second vote before final adoption. That will occur at the Feb. 10, 2026 council meeting.
