Brick Township officials on Tuesday night began the process of financing more than $700,000 in bonding to purchase two plots of land that will be preserved as open space, with the expectation that the state Green Acres program will reimburse a portion of the costs.
The council unanimously introduced ordinances that would effectuate the bond sale, appropriating $431,000 for one parcel and $296,000 for the other. Both of the properties were identified as locations ripe for preservation by the Brick Open Space Savers committee, formed to research potential opportunities to preserve land from development.
The first lot is located at approximately 2414 (Old) Hooper Avenue, located just east of the Drum Point Sports Complex and north of Lighthouse Court. It is a 1.48-acre property that is developed with a single-family residence built in 1957. The land is contiguous to the sports complex and other parcels of preserved open space, making it particularly qualified for additional preservation, officials said. The bond of $431,000 is expected to be pared down by a $323,250 grant from the state.
The second property is located on the opposite side of town, near Brick Memorial High School. The 5.2-acre property itself does not have a numerical address, but is located off the west end of Summit Avenue, north of Vista Court. The nearest main street is Maple Avenue, to its east. The trapezoidal lot connects to existing preserved and undeveloped space that separates the high school from the surrounding residential neighborhood. There are dozens of wooded plots surrounding it in every direction but east. The $296,000 bond is expected to be supported by a $222,000 Green Acres grant from the state.
The acquisition of both properties, if the grant funding comes to fruition, will take the $727,000 cost down to just $201,750. The bond ordinances are subject to a public hearing and second vote before adoption. That hearing is scheduled for the Feb. 24, 2026 council meeting.
